VoV Dr. Saji Varghese is the Founder & Chief Visionary Officer of Brown Reed Agri-waste Innovations and Associate Professor at Christ University, Bangalore. Dr. Varghese is the inventor of patented drinking straws made from naturally fallen coconut leaves, which are now produced under his social enterprise Sunbird Straws, providing employment to 100+ rural women across South India and reaching markets in more than 10 countries. His innovations have won national and international awards, including the Climate Launchpad Award (Scotland) and the Swiss Re Shine Entrepreneur Award, and have been featured in Forbes, WIPO, and DW Germany.
Dr. Saji demonstrated how empathy-led innovation can solve pressing social challenges and empower communities. Drawing from his journey as a social entrepreneur, he shared candid lessons on design thinking, sustainability, and social impact, offering students frameworks to create meaningful change.
